Purpose of the Trainee Research and Travel Awards

CanVECTOR Research Training Awards (fellowship, studentship) provide salary support for highly qualified, promising trainees or fellows to allow them to pursue research training in thromboembolism at a Canadian centre. The network and its partners have committed additional funding to provide operating and travel funding to trainees who are doing research training and conduct this under the supervision or mentorship of CanVECTOR members. These funds are intended to support the trainee’s research endeavours and provide travel funds for academic experiences that will enhance their research training.

Trainee Research Awards

  1. CanVECTOR Research Start-up Award

The network has dedicated funding to support individual trainees’ research activities. These funds are intended to help trainees to achieve their research objectives. To this end, the funds may be used for start-up operating funds for a research project or preliminary/pilot work to strengthen their research, including services, materials, or supplies. This funding is not intended to provide salary support for trainees and the requested funds must not overlap with funding that’s available from other sources. Research start-up funding is not intended to provide support for travel relating to any academic experiences (e.g. presentation of research work at a scientific conference). 

Amount: Up to $2,500 per trainee
Eligibility: Any trainee (medical student, resident, graduate student, fellow) that is conducting research under the supervision of a CanVECTOR member is eligible to apply. Priority will be given to applicant's who have not received CanVECTOR funding.
Relevant dates: Applications are accepted and reviewed twice a year. This year's submission deadlines are October 31st, 2019 and May 1st, 2020.
Application and award process: Please send a completed CanVECTOR Research Start-up Award Application Form and a summary of the research project (maximum 1-page excluding references; references may be included on a separate page) by email:  Applications will be reviewed by the co-chairs of the Training, Mentoring and Early Career Development platform. For successful applications, award funds will be sent to the trainee's supervisor.

Travel Bursaries for Academic Experiences

  1. CanVECTOR Academic Experiences Travel Award

This funding is intended to provide partial support for recipients of CanVECTOR fellowship or studentship awards to travel to another city for an academic experience related to their research activities. Examples of eligible activities include: travel to another CanVECTOR site to facilitate research activities or collaboration, travel to deliver an oral or poster presentation at a meeting or conference that directly relates to the applicant’s research, or travel to another city for knowledge translation activities related to a completed research project.

Amount: $500 will be awarded to each successful applicant.
Eligibility: Fellows and graduate students that currently hold a CanVECTOR salary award are eligible to apply.
Relevant dates: These funds can be requested at any time during the 1-year term of the studentship or fellowship salary award. Applications are accepted and considered anytime during the year. Applicants can expect a response within one month following the request. Requests must be made before the travel has occurred.
