Emerging Research Leaders Initiative (ERLI) 2016

We have partnered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation to be able to provide research operating funds to new investigators through the Emerging Research Leaders Initiative (ERLI). This program is focused on supporting the successful early career launch of new investigators. The goal is for new investigators to establish an independent research program and allow them to demonstrate the research productivity that will allow them to successfully secure funding from major research granting agencies.

Award Details

Duration of grant: Up to 3 years

Budget: Up to $50,000 per annum (maximum $150,000)

June 15, 2016: Launch Date
July 15, 2016: Letter of Intent (LOI) submission deadline to Participating Networks
August 12, 2016: Notification of LOI stage; Invitations to submit full applications to HSFC
September 12, 2016: Full application submission deadline to HSFC
December 13-15, 2016: Scientific peer review meeting
Late January 2017: Early notifications
April 2017: Announcement of funding decisions
July 1, 2017: Funding start date

Letter of Intent (LOI)

Applicants wishing to submit an application to the ERLI program must first submit a LOI to CanVECTOR. This is to ensure that the proposed research program aligns with the objectives of the network.

Letter of Intent Requirements:

  • A maximum one (1) page cover letter outlining the proposed research program, how your work relates to the network, and the potential value you can add to the network if funded (single spaced, 12pt font and 1 inch margins).
  • Canadian Common CV (
  • A letter from a sponsor who is supporting your application. The sponsor would be a member of the network (e.g. investigator, director, or collaborator). For list of members, please see our Members page.

LOI Submission Deadline to the CanVECTOR Network

Please email completed application packages to Nicole Langlois, Manager of the CanVECTOR Training and Mentoring Platform, at by July 15, 2016.

It is up to the applicant to ensure that all required items are included in the submission; incomplete application packages will not be accepted.
