Fall 2020 Research Start-up Competition Awards Announced


CanVECTOR has awarded six trainees with Research Start-up Awards in the Fall 2020 Research Start-up Awards competition. Competition winners were awarded up to $2,500 for VTE-related research projects for a total of $13,450 in competition funding.

The Research Start-up Awards competition is a network funding competition, typically held twice annually, intended to help trainees achieve their research objectives through project start-up funds for a research project or pilot work to strengthen their research.

The following trainees /projects were awarded for this competition:

  • Ms. Shaima Kaka, University of Ottawa
    • The Utility of D-Dimer in Excluding a Diagnosis of Pulmonary Embolism in the Anticoagulated Population.
  • Ms. Ashley Clarke, University of Calgary
    • Thrombelastography-Defined Severity and Duration of Hypercoagulability in Intermediate-High and High Risk Patients with Local Pulmonary Embolism Response Team Activation.
  • Dr. Marie-Pier Desjardins, Université Laval
    • CVL-Related Thrombosis in Neonates: a Multicentric Observational Study.
  • Ms. Mei Wang, McMaster University
    • Is There a Significant Interaction between Direct Oral Anticoagulant (DOACs) and Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) in Elderly Patients? A Population-Based Retrospective Cohort Study.
  • Dr. Heather McPhaden, McGill University
    • Incidence of Thrombotic Complications Post-Hospital Discharge in Patients with COVID-19: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
  • Dr. Joanne Britto, McMaster University
    • The McMaster Postgraduate PeriOPerative Anticoagulation Education Initiative (MacPOP Study).
